Is it Possible to See India Beyond Caste-Based Reservations?

No one would willingly give up reservations, and the fight for caste certificates continues. Even if a god were to descend to Earth, it would be nearly impossible to eradicate caste. However, it is not only possible but also desirable to see India without caste-based reservations. This era has seen significant changes, and the continued existence of reservations is questionable in today's context.

From Casteism to Reservations

Historically, casteism was a social evil that existed without legal sanction. However, the institution of reservations, which is a form of legal discrimination, is far worse. In ancient India, profession was often inherited by one's lineage - a son of a businessman became a businessman, a son of a farmer became a farmer, and so on. This system was deeply ingrained and lacked the modern concept of universal education, which enables individuals to choose their own professions.

The advent of modern universal education, introduced during the British period, fundamentally altered this dynamic. The constitution of India has effectively abolished casteism, making it illegal and punishable by law. With modern education and a merit-based examination system, people can now choose their professions based on merit. Additionally, democracy and merit-based job opportunities have made it clear that a king's son is not automatically a king. These changes have significantly diminishing the relevance of caste in modern India.

The Abolition of Casteism and the Necessity of Reservations

Casteism today primarily exists in private matters like marriage, and this too is changing with the rise of inter-caste marriages. The modern environment does not inherently perpetuate caste distinctions, as evidenced by the shift of many Brahmins to other professions and the reduced influence of caste in daily life. The few caste-related incidents that do occur are now punishable under the law just as any other crime.

Given these changes, the necessity of reservations, which were introduced to manage casteism, has clearly diminished. After 70 years of independence, reservations are no longer serving their original purpose and instead promote demerit and inefficiency. They also perpetuate the caste identity, which could otherwise be left in the past.

Alternative Solutions for Social Equity

An alternative approach could involve providing free quality education to the poor and lower caste people. This would enable them to improve their socio-economic status and compete on an equal footing. Additionally, creating enough employment opportunities, implementing a minimum wage, and promoting economic development are crucial steps. Social welfare measures for the marginalized sections can further support their upliftment. These measures can effectively address the needs of society without the need for reservations.

It is essential to move away from the politicization of reservations and focus on substantive policies that genuinely benefit society. By addressing the root causes of social inequality through these measures, India can move towards a more inclusive and equitable society, free from the shackles of caste-based reservations.
