The Concept of Healthy Aging and Its Multi-dimensional Approach

In my philosophy, aging is about enjoying life with a healthy body and soul. This philosophy forms the core of my daily routine, which has proven to work for me.

Gratitude and Acceptance

My well-being is closely tied to gratitude. As long as I continue to age, I am grateful because it is preferable to the alternative. Gratitude enhances my overall sense of well-being and contentment.

Healthy Aging: A Holistic Perspective

For me, healthy aging is not just about physical and psychological fitness. Based on my PhD work and my experiences working with senior citizens, I have discovered that it also encompasses socio-economic well-being and spiritual growth.

Socio-Economic Well-Being

Socio-economic well-being is influenced by a variety of factors. These include receiving respect and importance in old age from family and society, being financially secure, and being able to access social security benefits from the government. The World Health Organization and the biopsychosocial model of health emphasize the social dimension of health, alongside the physical and psychological dimensions.

Spiritual Growth

Spiritual growth is closely linked to self-actualization, which can be achieved through a sense of contentment and satisfaction with life in old age. This aspect of healthy aging is often overlooked, but it is a crucial component of overall well-being.

Defining Healthy Aging

In my opinion, healthy aging means being physically active and mobile, maintaining a positive outlook on life, being socially and financially secure, and having a sense of contentment with life, regardless of the challenges and dissatisfaction faced. It is a holistic concept that cannot be achieved alone. Family, civil society, and the government also play an important role in ensuring that senior citizens can experience this state.
