What is 5G Technology?

5G, or the fifth-generation wireless cellular media technology, represents a significant leap beyond 4G LTE. Although 5G rollout began in 2019, its widespread availability is still many years away. This technology promises high data rates and very low latency, revolutionizing various industries and applications, including artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and more.

According to the WHO, the radiation exposure from 5G infrastructure, at approximately 3.5 GHz, is comparable to that of 4G base stations. However, the use of multiple beams from 5G antennas may increase exposure depending on the user's location and cellular usage. Additionally, the decrease in the size of 5G base stations means they can be mounted almost everywhere, posing closer proximity concerns for residents.

Possible Health Hazards from 5G Radiation

The WHO is currently conducting a health risk assessment for exposure to radio frequencies, including 5G. By 2022, they will release a comprehensive whitepaper with evidence on possible health risks. Meanwhile, critics cite over 500 studies suggesting harmful health consequences from low-intensity radiation exposure, even when it does not cause significant tissue heating.

According to a Global Task Force of scientists, stringent caps on 5G radiation exposure should be established. The primary concern about 5G is its different infrastructure compared to 3G and 4G. 5G base stations, smaller and more distributed, can be mounted on poles, trees, or rooftops in residential areas, leading to closer proximity to homes, schools, and public spaces.

Debunking the Myth: 5G and the Spread of Coronavirus

Conspiracy theories regarding 5G as the origin of novel coronavirus have spread globally, but these claims are unfounded. In India, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has stated that there is no scientific evidence to support the claim that 5G network testing is responsible for the spread of the virus. The virus has spread to countries without 5G networks, further debunking this myth.

In an official statement, the DoT informed the public that 5G technology is not the cause of the spread of the virus. The virus has also spread to nations with no 5G networks, indicating that 5G trials are not causing the virus in India. Any claims you read on social media or in WhatsApp groups are baseless.

Present Regulations about Mobile Radiation

To ensure safety, multiple international organizations have established safe RF exposure limits for 5G networks. For example, the ICNIRP recently updated its principles to reduce exposure limits for frequencies over 6GHz. India, Belgium, Russia, and other countries have also declared more stringent limits.

Concerns Over Millimeter Wave Radiation

The WHO has called for additional research into the long-term health effects of mobile telecommunications. Its EMF Project, established in 1996, has been studying the health effects of exposure to electrical and magnetic fields. The project is analyzing the environmental and health effects of exposure to static and time-varying electrical and magnetic fields in the 0-300 GHz frequency range.

While current technologies lead to a slight temperature increase in the human body, the health effects of millimeter-wave radiation from 5G antennas are less understood. These waves are absorbed within a few millimeters of the skin and in the surface layers of the retina, indicating potential localized impacts.

Scientific Evidence Regarding Effects of EMF Radiation

The WHO and the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) maintain that guidelines for exposure depend on established scientific evidence. As long as the general exposure remains below international principles, 5G infrastructure and radiation from them do not pose a public health issue.

No peer-reviewed scientific study has definitively linked 5G to greater health risks in people, animals, or even plants. However, the lack of clarity suggests the need for further study to determine the full safety profile of 5G technologies. It is important to note that 5G networks do not facilitate electromagnetic communication between viruses and bacteria, which is a common conspiracy theory.

Understanding the reality of 5G radiation is crucial for dispelling myths and promoting responsible use of technology. As 5G continues to roll out, ongoing research and regulations will help ensure that the benefits outweigh any potential risks.
