Witnessing and Responding to Car Accidents: A Lifelong Journey of Responsibility
Have you ever witnessed a car accident? If so, did you stop to help out? What happened next? In this article, I will share a personal account of witnessing a serious accident, and reflect on my experiences and responses to various incidents throughout my lifetime.
A Recent Incident in Big Sur, CA
On a trip to Highway 1 in Big Sur, California, I encountered a dramatic accident involving a Fiat 124 and a Dodge Challenger. The Challenger was speeding and passed a line of slow cars in a no-passing zone, exceeding the legal speed limit. The result was a collision between the two vehicles, which resulted in the Fiat rolling several times. The passengers in the Fiat were belted in and survived. A representative from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) was present at the scene to handle the Dodge driver before we departed.
Responding to the Scene
When I stop to help at the scene of a car accident, I provide immediate aid until the first responders, such as EMTs and the CHP, arrive. In the recent incident, I was there to render aid and manage the scene until the local first responders arrived. There was not much else that could have been done in such a scenario.
Case Studies from My Lifetime
Throughout my life, I have witnessed numerous car accidents. Here are some instances that stand out:
Infancy: A Vehicle Smashing Incident
During my early years, I saw a vehicle smashing up another on a major road by an oncoming vehicle at a crossroads. This was a deeply impactful experience, as it was the first I encountered witnessing such a tragic event.
Teenage Years: A School Bus Accident
During my teenage years, I witnessed a school bus making a sharp turn and smashing into a vehicle in front of me. The impact severely damaged the school bus and the vehicle in front.
Young Adulthood: A Mini Truck Incident
A mini truck with a pot plant cart at the end made a sudden lane change, ripping the front beams off a young woman’s car. The trucker then drove away from the scene, adding an element of danger and instability to the situation.
Family-Involving Accidents
On a family trip, my grandfather's vehicle was rear-ended on a highway. Although no one was injured, my cousin and I, being minors at the time, had to go to the hospital for precautionary checkups as required by law.
On another day, I suffered rear-end collisions in rapid succession. First, while being driven in a school van, and then on my way to an evening event. These types of accidents can occur without warning and require immediate attention.
Recent Witnessing of a Serious Incident
Today, at approximately 1:05 PM Eastern Time, I witnessed one of the most serious firsthand incidents yet. A red vehicle in the parking lot hit two trees and severely damaged six other vehicles. This was particularly distressing as an elderly woman was at the wheel and had a clear panic attack following the accident.
The incident involved a red car moving backwards, shredding the sides of neighboring vehicles, and an elderly woman behind the wheel who appeared to be trying to escape the scene. Thankfully, no one was killed, but several people involved suffered from shock and required support.
Reflecting on My Role as a Witness
In conclusion, witnessing car accidents is a sobering experience. While I have managed to assist in various scenarios, there is only so much one person can do alone. In the face of such incidents, it is crucial to remain calm and call for emergency services promptly. These experiences have taught me the importance of being a responsible and compassionate witness in my community.
